FAQ Prospective students

1.1 What type of courses are offered by the University of Pavia?
The University of Pavia offers two types of programmes that require a different
admission procedure:
– Non-restricted access programmes are Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes that students can apply for without sitting a selective admission test, but only an
assessment test/interview which aims at finding out the level of academic
preparation of the candidate.
– Restricted access programmes are Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes that
accept a limited number of candidates and for which it is necessary to pass a
selective admission test in order to be eligible for enrollment.
Bachelor’s degree programmes offered by the University of Pavia are mostly taught
in Italian, except for the Bachelor’s degree in Artificial intelligence, while there is a
wide offer of Master’s degree programmes taught in English.

1.2 What are the language requirements for English-taught programmes?
Some English-taught programmes require applicants to hold an English language
certificate among those accepted by the University that you can check here. We
recommend you consult carefully the language requirements of the course you are
applying for.

1.3 Can I be exempted from the English language requirement?
Students coming from a native English-speaking country and students who have
completed their studies entirely in English are usually, but not always, exempted
from the English certificate requirement. We recommend you consult carefully the
language requirements of the course you are applying for.

1.4 What are the language requirements for Italian-taught programmes?
International students wishing to apply for a Program taught in Italian are required
to have a minimum Level B2 certificate of proficiency in Italian ( CILS, CELI, Roma3 o
PLIDA). Candidates who do not hold such a certificate will be required to sit an Italian
language test organized by the University of Pavia, usually in July and September of
each academic year.

1.5 Can I be exempted from the Italian language requirement?
You can be exempted from the Italian language requirement if you are an EU student
or a NON-EU student residing in Italy with a residence permit for the following
reasons:

  • EU long-term resident permit;
  • Residence permit for work reasons/self-employment;
  • Residence permit for Family reasons;
  • Residence permit for Asylum/subsidiary protection;
  • Residence permit for religious reasons;

1.6 What’s the admission procedure for an international prospective student?
If you are a prospective student and have obtained your diploma or degree outside
Italy, apply here: fill the online application form, upload the documents requested,
do the selective interview or the selective test, if requested, and get your admission
letter from the UNIPV Committee.

1.7 Is there a deadline to apply?
Yes, the intake for the academic year is usually divided in multiple calls: consult the
calendar and the deadlines here.

1.8 Is there an application fee?

The application fee for Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs is 35 €.

1.9 Is there a maximum number of courses for which I can apply?

Yes, you can apply for up to 3 different courses per intake.

1.10 I have chosen more than 1 program, how many application fees should I pay?

You have to pay for each chosen program. Pay attention that if you are applying for more than one program, before the payment, you need to make sure that you are paying the application fee of the correct program by double checking the email with the payment link provided.

1.11 How can I pay the application fee?

When you select a program, the system automatically sends you an email with the payment link. Please check your email or the “inbox” section in the menu on apply.unipv.eu after logging in. You can pay it online with a credit card or Paypal using the PagoPa service. If you have any contact person in Italy, you can ask them to pay in any tobacco shop with cash or card.

1.12 I have mistakenly paid the application fee for a course but I am interested in another course, can the payment be transferred to the correct programme?

Contact the admission office at the following email address: admission@unipv.it to solve the issue.

1.13 I’m from a poor country/I don’t have money to pay, can I get my application fee waived?

We regret to inform you that the application fee is not waivable.

1.14 When will I receive the results of my applications?
Results will be sent approximately 3-4 weeks after the end of the call. Consult the calendar here.
After the submission of your application you will receive information on its status; furthermore, if you apply to a Master’s degree program there will be the chance to be invited for an interview.

1.15 If I fail in the application, can I have my application fee refunded?

We regret to inform you that the application fee is not refundable.

1.16 Can I know why my application got rejected?

Unfortunately, we do not offer specific information on this matter. Usually, the reasons lie in the lack of minimum requirements or the high demand of the applicants which might have put you below other applicants.

1.17 I got rejected for a program in the previous call. Can I apply for the same course in another call or can I apply for other courses?

You are welcome to apply for any new program in the next call for the admission. However, we don’t recommend you reapply for the same program for which you got rejected unless you are sure that you have taken care of the reason for your rejection and you can imply this fact to the admission committee.

1.18 I have 11 years of schooling. Can I access a bachelor program?

According to the Italian ministerial regulations on enrollment in Italian public universities, students who apply for an undergraduate program must have completed at least 12 years of education, thus you cannot enroll in one of our Bachelor programs with 11 years of education. In order to fill this gap, you can apply and enroll in our Foundation Year preparatory program. Alternatively, you have to show that you have studied in any university or post secondary institution for at least 1 year.

1.19 What is the Foundation course?

It is a one full year preparatory course of Italian Language designed for students who want to access undergraduate degrees taught in Italian at the University of Pavia. The course includes:
– 420 hours of Italian language and Culture course from October until June.
– 300 hours of Area Study courses taught in Italian from February until June.
Students who pass the Foundation year final exams will meet the minimum entry requirements for undergraduate study at the University of Pavia and will be exempted from the Italian proficiency University admission test. Furthermore, if they enroll in one of the University of Pavia Bachelor’s degree programs, they are eligible to apply for a fee waiver for the first year.

1. 20 I have a British qualification/American high school diploma. Is there any specific requirement if I would like to apply to an undergraduate course?

Yes, if you have obtained a British or American high school title, there are the following requirements:
– British qualification: student must have passed at least 3 A-levels relevant to the course which student would like to study with passing grade.
– Scottish high school diploma: at least 3 Advanced Highers or at least 2 Advanced Highers + 4 Highers.
– American high school diploma: students must have passed at least 3 Advanced Placements (APs) with a grade from 3 to 5.
If you have not obtained the qualifications requested you can apply for our Foundation Year preparatory program.

1.21 I am an undergraduate course applicant but I have studied in an IB school/European school/a foreign school in Italy/a foreign school with an Italian curriculum. How can I know if my qualification is valid for the undergraduate course?

If you have studied in one of the schools mentioned in the question, contact the Admission Office admission@unipv.it  and send us your school information. We will check it and give you a response shortly.

1.22 I still haven’t concluded my studies, can I still apply for a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree?

Yes, it is possible to apply even if you are yet to obtain your final qualification. In this case, you have to provide an official enrollment certificate and the transcript of records of the previous academic year.

1.23 Do I have to get my documents translated before submitting them for evaluation?

We accept documents in Italian, English, French and Spanish. All documents issued in a different language must be provided with an official translation in either Italian or English.

1.24 I have been accepted for a Bachelor’s/Master’s programme but I am unable to start my studies. Can I defer the admission for the following year?

Unfortunately admission is only valid for the academic year in which it has been granted. If you want to start your studies in the following year, you will have to restart the admission process from the beginning.

2.1 I am currently studying in another university and I would like to transfer to University of Pavia. Is it possible?
Transfers to courses in Italian are possible from June to October. Please see the Transfer/Recognition page.

2.2 Do I need to take the IMAT if I ask for a transfer? (Harvey course)

If you’re currently enrolled in a medical course at another university, you can decide not to take  the IMAT test and apply for a direct transfer. However, students who take IMAT will have priority in the transfer application evaluation.

2.3 I have a foreign degree in medicine. How can I get the recognition?

You will have to take the admission test and only if you pass the test and are admitted to the 1st year, could you start the pre-evaluation procedure of your previous career to obtain recognition of most of the exams you had passed in the past but you will not be admitted to subsequent years.

3.1 How do I know if I require a visa?

Follow this link to find out whether you need to apply for a study visa (type D) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence and what documentation you need.

3.2 How do I request the visa?

In order to request a study visa (type D) you must pre-enroll through the Universitaly portal.

3.3 What is pre-enrollment?

Each Non-EU student residing abroad without any Italian permit of stay must apply for a study visa. The pre-enrollment on the Universitaly platform is the very first step of the whole visa process. The pre-enrollment procedure must be completed at the competent diplomatic-consular mission and it is not complete with the sending of the pre-enrollment application only. Take an appointment with the Embassy.

3.4 How can I pre-enroll/I don’t know how to pre-enroll?

The Admission Office has prepared a pre-enroll guideline which may help. Besides the guideline, there is also a video tutorial. Please click to watch.

3.5 I have submitted a pre-enrollment but I made a mistake. Can you correct it/help me?

If you need to modify your pre-enrollment application in any way, please send an email to admission@unipv.it .

3.6 What documents should I upload for the Universitaly? Do I need a CIMEA Statement or DoV?

You can proceed with uploading the exact same documents that you applied with and uploaded in the dream apply platform. please make sure that you also upload the admission letter from your course of enrollment in the ‘others’ section. The DoV certificate or CIMEA statement is not mandatory at this stage. You may request the issuance of your DoV certificate from the Embassy upon the visa request.

3.7 I need an accommodation proof for my visa application.

We have listed all the possibilities of finding an accommodation in Pavia on the Accommodation webpage.

As an alternative you can also use a hotel reservation as the accommodation proof but please verify with the Italian Embassy/Consulate if the hotel reservation can be accepted.

3.8 I want to bring my wife/husband/spouse/children with me. How can I apply for the visa for them?

The admitted students must apply for the study visa. Concerning the visa for the student’s family members, please contact the visa office in your country for further information.

3.9 The visa office rejected my visa application. Please help me!

Unfortunately we can’t interfere with the decision made by the Embassy concerning the visa process. We kindly suggest you verify the rejection reason with the visa office

4.1 If I am admitted to a course, what are the following steps to complete?

Once admitted to the course for which you applied, you can start the enrollment process by following the information that the Admission Office will send you.

The enrollment is considered valid after the payment of the first-installment fee of the amount of 156 euros by the deadline that will be communicated to you.

4.2 Can I enroll even without a visa document?

Yes, it is possible to do so. However, your enrollment will be finalized only after completing the procedure on the Universitaly portal for the visa process.

4.3 What happens to my enrollment if I don’t manage to obtain the visa?

If you do not obtain the visa within the deadline indicated by the University, your enrollment will be terminated. You can obtain the refund of the first-installment fee only in case of a rejected visa.

4.4 What are the documents that I have to provide in order to finalize my enrollment?

In order to finalize your enrollment, you have to provide some additional documents.

Documents may change depending on the country in which the Diploma has been issued.

All students enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program must submit the following documents:

– The original copy of your High School Diploma (or a certified copy or a replacement certificate), translated (if issued in a language other than Italian, English, French or Spanish) and legalized by the Italian representatives in your Country or Apostilled by the competent local authorities (only for countries adhering to the Aja Convention) or, in alternative, you can request the statement of Verification issued by CIMEA. Please note that the legalization/notarization/apostillation/Statement of Verification is waived if the diploma is accompanied by a QR-code or link to official database demonstrating the validity of the document or in case of specific agreements between Italy and the country in which the diploma has been obtained.

– Proof that you have passed the Admission Test (if applicable in your Home Country for admission to higher education);

– A copy of your visa document/residence permit (if applicable).

Students with a study title obtained in one of the  Countries under the Lisbon Recognition Convention (available in “this list” :https://www.enic-naric.net/) must provide the “Statement of correspondence” downloaded from the “ARDI database”: https://ardi.cimea.it/en. Please select the country in which your academic title has been issued, choose the type of institution (Higher education and upper secondary school education corresponding to university and high school, respectively), choose the level of your academic title (for information on EQF levels please refer to “this page”:https://europa.eu/europass/en/description-eight-eqf-levels).

Students with a study title obtained in Countries outside the Lisbon Recognition Convention must provide the Declaration of value issued by the Italian representatives in your Country or, in alternative, the Statement of Comparability issued by CIMEA (request it “through the UNIPV link”:https://cimea.diplo-me.eu/unipv/#/auth/register in order to receive it in 30 days).

All students enrolled in a Master’s Degree program must provide the following documents:

– The original copy of your Bachelor’s Degree (or a certified copy or a replacement certificate), translated (if issued in a language other than Italian, English, French or Spanish) and legalized by the Italian representatives in your Country or Apostilled by the competent local authorities (only for countries adhering to the Aja Convention) or, in alternative, you can request the statement of Verification issued by CIMEA. 4.5 What happens if I don’t have these documents?

If you don’t have the requested documents at the moment of enrollment, you have to fill-in and sign a self-certificate through which you commit to providing the requested documents within the deadlines.

4.6 What happens if I don’t provide the documents within the deadline?

There are three different deadlines within which students have to submit all requested documents. If documents are not provided within the first deadline, your career will be temporarily frozen and you won’t be able to sit for exams; after the second deadline you will be enrolled as a first-year repeating student; after the third deadline, your career will be permanently terminated, usually the 31st december of the following year (e.g. a.y. 23/24 third deadline is the 31/12/2024).

5.1 What’s the amount of the tuition fee?

A student’s financial contribution is composed of two parts: a fixed fee and a variable fee. The fixed fee is € 156. The variable fee depends on the degree course and either family income (ISEE) or a flat rate (for non-EU only). The total amount of the tuition fees range from about €160 to €4500 per year. 5.2 I am a citizen of a non-EU country. I reside outside Italy. How is the tuition fee calculated?
For non-EU students residing outside Italy, the University of Pavia automatically applies the “flat rate”, which includes the fixed tax of 156 euros, it is determined by citizenship and it applies to students with a study visa and a regular permit of stay for study. The flat rate ranges from 400 euro to 4500 euro. For more details please see this page.

If it is more convenient, students can ask that their tuition fees are adjusted to their family financial situation.

5.3 I want to take advantage of the flat rate tuition fee. What documents should I submit?

In order to benefit from our citizenship based tuition fee, you need to have a study visa. Your tuition fee will be automatically set regarding your citizenship. No other documentation concerning your financial situation is required. If you have double citizenship, the European will prevail thus considering you as a EU student. If you have two non-EU citizenships, the one on whose passport you obtained the visa will prevail.

5.4 I am a citizen of a EU country. I reside outside Italy. How is the tuition fee calculated?
Tuition fees for EU students is based on family income and range from about €160 to €4.500 per year. For more information, please visit this page.

5.5 I am a citizen from a non-EU country but I reside in Italy. How is the tuition fee calculated for me?
Tuition fees for non-EU students residing in Italy are based on family income and range from about €160 to €4.500 per year. For more information, please visit this page.

5.6 My tuition fees are based on family income, can I pay in installments?
Yes. For the academic year 2023/24, the tuition fee was split in 4 installments with this composition:
– 1st installment, 156 € (+ 20% of the variable fee for enrollment from the second year onwards), to be paid upon enrollment.
– 2nd installment, 30% of the variable fee.
– 3rd installment, 40% of the variable fee.
– 4th installment, 10% of the variable fee.

5.7 My tuition fees are based on flat rate, can I pay in installments?
Yes. For the academic year 2023/2024, tuition fees were split in 4 installments. The first installment corresponds to the fixed fee (156 €). The difference (tuition fee – 156 €) is split in three installments of equal amount.

5.8 I want to withdraw my enrollment. What should I do?
If your enrollment has been finalized by the offices, you must follow the procedure of “rinuncia agli studi”. If your enrollment has not been finalized, you should contact the admission office to withdraw and receive instructions on how to request the refund.

5.9 Does your University offer any scholarship to cover expenses?

The University of Pavia, through the EDISU (Institution for the Right to Education) organization, offers several kinds of scholarships/funding for a sum up to 7.000 euro per year to the enrolled students. Click the funding page to read more.

5.10 How can I apply for the EDiSU scholarship? What are the requirements?

The Edisu office is an independent office collaborating with the University of Pavia, working distributing scholarships on behalf of the regional government.

You may apply for this scholarship through their dedicated platform. The call for the application can be found here. The deadline to deliver the documents is usually at the beginning of August.

Make sure to read the call carefully and provide the EDiSU with the required documents on time. For any other inquiry regarding the scholarship, you may directly contact the EDiSU team here.

Am I eligible for exemptions or reimbursements?
According to the Regulation of University of Pavia on fees, students who fulfill specific conditions can ask for an exemption or reimbursement. Please see this page and this page.

6.1 Accomodation:

 

6.1.1 How can I find an accommodation in Pavia?

We have listed all the possibilities of finding an accommodation in Pavia on the Accommodation webpage.

6.1.2 I want to get a place in the university’s residence/dorm/dormitory/collegio. How so?

All the public residences/dorms are managed directly by the EDISU office. At the beginning of July of each year the EDISU office opens the application for the public residences/dorms and a call for application is normally announced by the end of June. Please get more information on the EDISU’s website.

6.1.3 How much is the cost for renting a room in Edisu collegi?
Fees can vary from a minimum of around 180 euros to a maximum of 300 euros per month for a single room, depending on the income tier and the collegio; from a minimum of 160 euros to a maximum of 250 euros for a place in a twin room depending on income tier and on the collegio.

6.1.4 How much is the cost for renting a room in a private flat?

Rooms can be single or double and usually cost from € 250 to € 350 per month, depending also on the area. The historic center tends to be more expensive.
Pay attention to the voice “spese” (meaning additional costs for utilities such as light, gas, heating) mainly when there are “spese condominiali”. The cost can  be up to € 100 per month and per person).

6.1.5 Can I bring my pet with me?Is there any pet friendly residence/apartment?

Usually residences/private apartments are not pet friendly because the owners are afraid of any damage created by pets. If you do want to bring the pet with you make sure to  communicate it to the residence/apartment owner before booking it to avoid any conflict.

6.2 Residence permit:

6.2.1 How can I apply for the residence permit?

6.2.2 My residence permit card has not been issued for a long time? What can I do?

In this case we advise you to consult with the university help desk for the residence permit that is located in the Questura. You can also contact via email: permesso.soggiorno@unipv.it

6.2.3 How can I renew my residence permit?
You can find the relative information always on Documents required for your stay webpage.

6.3 Health insurance

6.3.1 I am an EU citizen and I have insurance. Should I buy an Italian insurance or can I use the one I have?

EU students (including students from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) can use their European Health Insurance Card (“EHIC”), which gives access to immediate necessary care under the same conditions as Italian citizens.

6.3.2 Do I need Italian Insurance for my VISA request?

To submit your request, usually you need travel insurance that covers your expenses. However, each embassy has its own specific requirements. Please make sure you will check this with your embassy.

Moreover, upon your arrival and in order to request for the Permit of stay, you need to register for either private or SSN Italian insurance. You can check out the details of the procedure here.

6.3.3 How can I ask for Italian insurance?

Upon your arrival in Italy, you can ask for this insurance by making the payment in the post office. Please consult the instructions here.

6.3.4 Why should I have Insurance? For how long should my insurance cover?

In order to request your permit of stay, you need to present valid insurance for the whole year. Since the expiry date of your permit of stay is related to this document, you need a valid, 1-year insurance. We suggest you apply for getting the SSN social insurance of Italy since it gives you the opportunity to visit a doctor for free and the prices for visiting a specialist, test and medications are reduced. 6.3.5 Are there any English speaking Doctors that I can choose from?

There are some doctors who can speak and understand English. You can ask the ASST officer to choose an English speaking doctor for you. Having access to all the Doctors profiles, they can help you out with choosing an English speaking Doctor. After completing the payment for your SSN insurance in the post office, you can consult this matter with ASST officers.

6.3.6 I have an emergency situation. What should I do?

In case of extreme necessity, you can go 24/7 to the Emergency Room, Pronto Soccorso, of Policlinico San Matteo Hospital. Take with you your personal documents and the proof of your Health Insurance (Health Card or receipt of the payment).

Otherwise, you can call the emergency number 118.

6.4 Tax code:

6.4.1 What is the Codice Fiscale and how can I get it?
It is an alphanumeric code of 16 characters. The code serves to identify unambiguously individuals residing in Italy irrespective of residency status.

6.4.2 How can I request a codice fiscale? (EU)

Codice Fiscale is a document which is issued by the embassy of Italy in each country or by the Agenzia delle entrate of the city of your city of study.

Since you don’t need to apply for a VISA, you can form a request for the fiscal code in the embassy.

If the embassy doesn’t offer such an offer, you may direct your request by this instruction to the Agenzia delle entrate.

6.4.3 How can I request a codice fiscale? (Non-EU)

Codice Fiscale is a document which is issued by the embassy of Italy in each country or by the Agenzia delle entrate of the city of your city of study. Since you need to apply for a VISA in the Embassy , you may also ask for the issuance of this document.

If the embassy doesn’t offer such a kind of service, you may direct your request by this instruction to the Agenzia delle entrate.

6.4.4 I have the fiscal code generated by the university’s enrollment system. Can I use that?

The fiscal code you got during the enrollment is automatically generated by our system. Anyway it’s not officialized nor registered in the Italian tax system so you still need to apply for it through the Italian Embassy in your country or Pavia’s Agenzia delle entrate. 7.1 What are the things I need to know for my university life?

7.2 How can I apply for an Ateneo card?

You don’t need to make any application for getting an Ateneo card. Once your enrollment is finalized, the University of Pavia sends the issuance request to the bank for you. You just need to wait for the notification about the card collection.

Once you receive the email, you can visit us at the welcome office and pick it up.

7.3 How can I use my Ateneo card as a bank account?

After the collection of the Ateneo card, you need to activate it first to be able to use it. For this reason, to activate it as a credit card, email pavia.succursale@popso.it with the required documents attached. The full list of the documents requested and the exact procedure can be found here.

7.4 What is a Smart card and How can I apply for a Smart card?

The Smart Card allows students to access controlled-entry libraries and to use drinking water dispensers. When the card is ready, students receive an email by the Students Administrative office with the collection instructions. The University will prepare it for you so you don’t need to make any request. When the card is ready for collection, you will be notified by the Welcome Office via email.

7.5 I lost my Ateneo Card! My Ateneo Card is robbed! What should I do?

In order to ask for your new Ateneo card, you need to request a new one on the Filo diretto platform here.

7.6 I lost my Smart Card! My Smart Card is robbed! What should I do?

In order to ask for your new Smart card, you need to request a new one by sending a request to tessere@unipv.it .

7.7 Does the University have a psychological support service?
Yes, a Psychological Counselling Service is active. This free service (in Italian and English) is for students, teachers and technical-administrative staff. The talks will take place via the Zoom video call platform with the necessary guarantees to protect privacy. To access, simply book according to the indications published on the related page.

7.8 Is there a library inside the University of Pavia?
Of course, and more than one! The University of Pavia has 9 libraries to serve its various faculties. The Library System of the Pavia University has activated online access to several e-books and e-journals. The list of the e-journals and e-books with reserved or free online access is available in Link Up (the specific service dedicated to the online resources) and in the Pavia Union Catalogue (OPAC) and the Italian union Catalogue of Serials (ACNP). To be admitted to the University Libraries, the user must apply to the library of his interest, using the Affluences App (if the library is reached by this service, also available in the web version https://www.affluences.com) or by sending an e-mail to the addresses listed in the extraordinary plan Phase 3.1. For the duration of the health emergency, the local and interlibrary loan will continue to be provided in ‘contactless’ mode and possibly even at home. Read more here.

7.9 Is there any university canteen or café inside the campus?

8.1 When do the course programs start?

 

Generally speaking, the programs start in early October and finish by late February. The second semester usually starts from early March till late July. Take note that this is a general rule and each program might differ.

8.2 When should I be in Pavia for the new semester?

The academic lectures usually start around early October. However, if you need to find an accommodation. We advise you to set your arrival in a way that you spend some time hunting for an accommodation.
