Pavia is a city-campus, with a network of university residences (‘Collegi’) and facilities for study and sports that is unique in Italy. There are twenty university residences in Pavia, where approximately 2000 students live and grow together, meet important personalities of culture, spend periods of study abroad, and prepare their future to the best. Besides accommodation service, in fact, they offer facilities for teaching, leisure and education purposes, and arrange cultural activities that enhance the educational experience of students. Living in a “Collegio” offers the opportunity to belong to a community where academic achievement, traditional events, parties and sporting rivalries play key roles.

There are three types of student residences (“Collegi”) in Pavia:

  • Residences run by EDiSU (Ente per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario)
  • Merit-based residences
  • Privately managed residences

EDiSU (Ente per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario) is an autonomous institution that provides scholarships and manages most of Pavia’s residences. It provides approximately 1600 beds for students in 11 residences located near the historic center or in proximity to the university institutes, all equipped with guest accommodations for foreigners and conferences. It also manages a twelfth residence in Cremona, serving the Faculty of Musicology.

Access to the beds in the residence is through a public competition held according to the provisions of the annual competition notice. The cost varies depending on the income bracket.

Edisu also manages 1 residence located in Cremona:

Edisu fees

For Edisu scholarship beneficiaries (students who meet both Edisu merit and income-based requirements) the accommodation is free of charge. Please, find more about Edisu scholarships here.

Students who do not meet Edisu income-based requirements can apply too. In this case, fees are calculated according to income tier and accommodation type, and they can vary from a minimum of about 170 euros to a maximum of 340 euros per month.

How to apply to Edisu residences

On Edisu website you will find all the information about residences and the call for applications (usually published each year in July).

Applications approximately open at the beginning of July and close around mid-August.
They must be submitted exclusively online on Edisu website, by registering and accessing the “Online Student Services” area.

Studying in a merit-based residence means having high-level facilities available, designed to support the whole University career, and favoring a rapid and qualified entry into the job’s world. The oldest ones are the Almo Collegio Borromeo, founded in 1561, and the Collegio Ghislieri, which dates back to 1567.

These residences offer: internal courses, tutoring, international mobility programs, continuous cultural events and also recreational and socializing activities.

There are four merit-based residences in Pavia:

In order to apply for a room, please check each residence’s website.

Calls for applications are usually published each year in June, and students are asked to participate in a competition (a written test and two oral tests) which takes place in September.

In order to maintain the assigned room, each year the students have to respect the high academic performance requirement of an average annual grade not less than 27/30.

The cost of the accommodation is largely supported by the residence, since the students are only asked for a contribution proportionate to family income and many rooms are completely free.

Furthermore, many students from Pavia's merit-based residences have the opportunity to complement their education by attending pre- and post-graduate courses at the University Institute for Advanced Studies - IUSS.

Residences associated to the University of Pavia, but privately administered. The admission is managed independently by each residences:
