NON-EU Prospective students

EU citizens do not need a visa to enter Italy.

Non-EU citizens residing outside of Italy need to start the online pre-enrollment application in order to request a study visa (type D).

To find out whether you need to apply for a study visa at the Italian Embassy/Consulate in your country of residence - and what documentation you need - follow this link.
Further and detailed information is available here: “Procedures for entry, residency and enrollment of International students”.

1.SUBMIT THE PRE-ENROLLMENT APPLICATION FOR A STUDY VISA

As established by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), the pre-enrollment application for a study visa must be submitted online through the portal Universitaly. Consult the guidelines here.

Bear in mind to upload:

  • Passport
  • Photocard
  • Secondary School diploma (for Bachelor's degree admission) or Bachelor's Degree (for Master's degree admission) issued in English/Spanish/French or officially translated into Italian
  • Admission letter/Conditional offer letter

Please note that the deadline to submit your pre-enrollment application for a.y. 24/25 is the 31st August 2024.

Without the pre-enrollment application, the enrollment at the University cannot be confirmed.

2. COMPLETE THE VISA APPLICATION AT THE COMPETENT ITALIAN AUTHORITY

The pre-enrollment application for a study visa must be completed at the competent diplomatic authority in your Country. Check the Italian Embassy/Consulate contacts here.

3. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR VISA

With a visa you are only allowed to travel back and forth to Italy.
Remember to send it to admission@unipv.it and upload it in your Student Portal to confirm your enrollment at the University of Pavia.

Non-EU prospective students residing abroad who have applied for an Italian-taught program must sit the online Italian language test provided by CISIA.

The passing score is ≥ 54/72, comparable to a B2 Italian language proficiency level, but please be aware that it is an assessment test thus it does not imply the issuing of an Italian language proficiency certificate.

The test costs 35 euros.

For the A.Y.2024/2025 the test was held on the 11th of July 2024 and on the 20th September 2024.

Students who fail the test can not enroll.

Detailed information on the test is available here.

 The following categories of students are exempted from the Italian language test:

  1. Students intending to enroll in degree programs entirely taught in English;
  2. Students holding an Italian language certification at level B2 of the Council of Europe or higher (CILS, CELI, Roma3, or PLIDA) issued within the CLIQ quality system (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità), which gathers the current certifying bodies (Università per stranieri di Perugia, Università per stranieri di Siena, Università Roma Tre, Società Dante Alighieri), also issued by the Università per stranieri "Dante Alighieri" of Reggio Calabria, also in agreement with Italian Institutes of Culture abroad or other entities;
  3. Students holding an Italian language certification at level C1 and C2 of the Council of Europe or higher (CILS, CELI, Roma3, or PLIDA) issued within the CLIQ quality system (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità), which gathers the current certifying bodies (Università per stranieri di Perugia, Università per stranieri di Siena, Università Roma Tre, Società Dante Alighieri), also issued by the Università per stranieri "Dante Alighieri" of Reggio Calabria, also in agreement with Italian Institutes of Culture abroad or other entities;
  4. Students holding a five-year or four-year secondary school diploma obtained from Italian state and private schools abroad;
  5. Students holding one of the final secondary school diplomas listed in Annex 2 of the ministerial circular;
  6. Students who have obtained the Diploma in Italian language and culture from the Università per Stranieri of Perugia and Siena;
  7. Holders of complementary certificates to the final Middle School diploma obtained in Argentina, attesting to the attendance of a course of study including the teaching, for at least 5 years, of the Italian language.

Depending on whether the Degree program of interest is a “Non-restricted access” (“Accesso libero”) or a “Restricted access” (“Accesso programmato”) program, candidates are requested to sit a different kind of entrance test.

NON-RESTRICTED ACCESS PROGRAMS

For Bachelor's/Master's single-cycle degree courses: candidates are requested to sit a non-selective assessment, which can consist in a TOLC test provided by CISIA, or in a test organized by the Department. In the event of test failure, it will be possible to enroll anyway but with educational debts (“O.F.A.”), a gap that can be filled with additional courses or exams during the first year of study.

For Master's degree courses: interview or evaluative test (if required by the Commission).

RESTRICTED ACCESS PROGRAMS

For Bachelor's/Master's single-cycle degree courses: selective test;

For Master's degree courses: selective admission test or, for some study programs, evaluation of qualifications. All information on access tests and enrollment procedures is indicated in the respective Call for applications.

Candidates are invited to read the instructions for each degree course by consulting the list available at this link (information for the academic year 2025/2026 will be available in the coming months).

ATTENTION: If you are a non-EU student (applying for a study visa), make sure you have submitted the pre-enrollment application on the Universitaly portal.

Once you have passed the required tests (language test, culture test, and any admission tests), to enroll you will need to follow the indicated procedure.

Proceed with REGISTRATION on the Student Portal (Area Riservata). One of the first pieces of information required to complete the telematic REGISTRATION procedure (necessary for participating in competitions or various study courses) is the tax code (codice fiscale). The tax code is issued in Italy by the Agenzia delle entrate; however, it is possible to identify it using an online function.

Complete the ONLINE ENROLLMENT procedure by accessing the Student Portal with the assigned credentials USERNAME and PASSWORD, and clicking on the menu item SECRETARY>ENROLLMENT.

Select the chosen study course, fill in the section with your personal information and upload the following documents:

  • Passport-sized photograph
  • Copy of both sides of the personal identification document inserted during registration
  • Copy of the Italian Tax code; in the case of students with foreign citizenship who do not have the card at the time of enrollment, its presentation is allowed at a later time;
  • Copy of the visa/permit/residence permit card; in case students do not have it at the time of enrollment, its presentation is allowed at a later time.

Once your on-line enrollment has been completed correctly, the system will generate a receipt of enrollment. After that, you will be able to proceed to the payment of the Enrollment Tax (156 euros) through the PagoPA system, both online and offline. Check here for payment instructions.

In order to finalize your enrollment, you must send scans of the following documents to the Admission Office (admission@unipv.it):
