Educational goals
The Master's degree course in Writing and Projects for the Visual and Performing Arts is designed to equip graduates with precise expertise in contemporary artistic languages and practices, enabling them to effectively blend together the conceptual-artistic and social-participatory spheres. The specific objectives of the course will be pursued over the two years according to precise learning areas: Visual arts and visual culture: It provides advanced theoretical, historical, critical and production skills in the qualifying course subjects L-ART/06 (PEMM-01/B), L-ART/03 (ARTE-01/C), M-FIL/04 (PHIL-04/A), L-FIL-LET/11 (LICO- 01/A). In addition, it refines students’ training in contemporary visual arts through specialised course subjects. Through laboratory activities and workshops, students will benefit from specific training in writing and design in the cultural sphere. Students will develop an understanding of the artistic context and the production and receptive strategies of artistic and audiovisual texts. Focusing on the languages of cinema and art in all their complexity (textual, verbal and audiovisual) fosters the development of broad and adaptable skills. This training produces scholars and professionals who can combine historical and theoretical knowledge with the management and enhancement of cultural assets for scientific, archival and conservation activities, as well as for the conception and organisation of projects that promote the circulation and enhancement of these assets within cultural and artistic processes. Performance and Anthropology: It provides advanced knowledge of the historical and cultural contexts of performing arts and performance, reinforcing understanding of languages, critical strategies and production techniques in the qualifying course subjects L-ART/05 (PEMM-01/A) and M-DEA/01 (SDEA-01/A). It also refines training in the contemporary artistic and social context through specialised course subjects. Through laboratory activities and workshops, students will benefit from specific training in writing and design in the cultural sphere. The Master's degree develops an understanding of the artistic context and the production and receptive strategies of performance and performance arts texts. The focus on languages and scenic writing in all their complexity (textual, verbal and performance-related) is intended to provide broad and cross-cutting skills and train scholars and professionals so that they can combine historical and theoretical knowledge to engage in scientific, archival and conservation activities or devise and organise projects for work in the artistic and public spheres. In the first year, focus will be on developing a solid knowledge base and useful theoretical, historical and critical skills for reading the contemporary art scene. This approach is strongly interdisciplinary and considers aesthetic, artistic, productive and social aspects within an overall framework. This knowledge is provided through theoretical and methodological courses and seminars in the relevant disciplines. These courses also provide advanced technical, methodological and operational skills in the fields of performing arts and multimedia production, as well as in the different codes of theatre, dance, cinema, photography, radio and television, in various historical and geographical contexts. In the second year, the course aims to provide excellent skills in developing project proposals in the fields of theatre, cinema, photography, radio, and television, as well as texts for curating, promoting, and communicating events. It aims to consolidate the ability to evaluate and propose innovative projects that are specific to the local context and capable of engaging with the target audience in terms of agency and social inclusion. These skills are acquired by the students through participation in laboratories, seminars and workshops, conducted by professionals in close interaction with lecturers, developing both personal processing skills and the ability to interact in groups and manage shared objectives, specifically in the learning areas of the performing arts and multimedia production disciplines. Overall, the close connection between the course and industry-specific institutions and companies will enable students to be establish contact with institutions and professional entities, gaining high-profile skills and knowledge such as those required in the areas of organisation of performing arts events, publishing, museums and scientific research. Graduates will be fluent in at least one European Union language, in addition to Italian, and will be able to consult bibliographies in foreign languages related to their field of expertise.
Career opportunities
Culture (art, media, entertainment) Managers with Specific Focus on Local Areas and Public Space. Graduates will be able to access various job opportunities in the media, entertainment and cultural events sector as specialists, both creatively (as scriptwriters, programme and multimedia platform programmers, and text and contribution editors in specialised publishing), and in other areas (as theatre, film and television critics, dramaturgical advisors, programme and format creators for film production companies, broadcasters and television platforms). They can also work as an integrated communication systems operator, web content editor, copywriter, videomaker or visual designer. On the organisational side, they can work as a curator of cultural and performing arts events, particularly for public organisations; artistic directors for theatre organisations, community halls, cultural foundations and museum institutions; social and community theatre operators; socio-educational trainers in field of the arts. They can also coordinate social inclusion and territorial regeneration projects through visual and performing arts. Graduates of a three-year degree course in class L10 may carry out teaching activities in upper secondary schools, provided they complete the educational path set out in the current regulations and comply with the necessary curricular and extracurricular requirements.
Admission requirements
For admission to the Master’s Programme, students must hold a degree (which may a degree obtained according to the regulations in force prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99, as amended) or a three-year university degree or another qualification obtained abroad that has been recognised by the relevant bodies of the University. First and second level diplomas in higher education in art, music and dance (aka AFAM), as set out in Ministerial Decree 508 of 21 December 1999, as amended, are also valid qualifications for admission to the master's degree programme. Admission also requires: An adequate basic, methodological and historical background acquired in the previous course of studies in the linguistic, literary, historical-philosophical, and historical-artistic fields, as well as basic knowledge of the codes and disciplines of the performing arts, cinema and audiovisual communication.
