The international Master’s Degree Program in European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact is based on a study path jointly designed by nine European universities: the University of Coimbra, the University of Iași, the University of Jena, the University of Pavia, the University of Poitiers, the University of Salamanca, the University of Turku, Johannes Kepler University Linz and Umeå University.

These universities are part of the EC2U project, European Campus of City-Universities. EC2U is a project within the European Universities Initiative (EUI), aimed at promoting higher education in Europe through the creation of a European macro-campus. The consortium of the nine universities is known as the EC2U Alliance.

The degree program aims to train experts in European languages, cultures and societies who can work in the fields of intercultural communication and international relations. Graduates will be future professionals able to manage linguistic, cultural and social diversity in the European context.

The high level of proficiency in two European languages required for admission means that the program does not focus on language learning itself, which is a prerequisite. Instead, it focuses on the development of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills: linguistic and communicative competence for the understanding and production of written and oral texts used in international communication and in multilingual and multicultural contexts; digital, technological and IT skills for managing these texts across different media; understanding of the cultural and socio-economic landscape of the language areas studied; and basic skills in computational text processing for the study and understanding of linguistic, cultural and social phenomena.
