The University of Pavia is a founding member of the “European Campus of City-Universities – EC2U” Alliance. Funded by the European Commission under the second pilot call for European Universities Alliances, the project officially started on 1 November 2020. In July 2023 it secured renewed funding for a four-year period (2023–2027), which can be extended to six years (2027–29).
EC2U is an Alliance that brings together nine historic and multidisciplinary universities (Coimbra, Iași, Jena, Linz, Pavia, Poitiers - coordinator, Salamanca, Turku, Umeå), all of which share a strong international outlook while maintaining deep local roots, making them true city-universities. Among the associated partners are the nine municipalities, along with other socio-economic stakeholders such as technology hubs, student associations, chambers of commerce and the Ivan Franko University of Lviv in Ukraine.
The Alliance aims to create a truly pan-European campus by establishing a shared governance model, exponentially increasing mobility within the nine academic communities, and developing innovative models in education, research, and third mission activities.
Four United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) serve as key reference points:
- #SDG3: Good Health and Well-being
- #SDG4: Quality Education
- #SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- #SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
These goals guide the Alliance’s activities, including the establishment of joint Master’s programs and Virtual Institutes.
